Tabari

Tafseer of The Cattle · Al-An'aam · 6:50

Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"

    The explanation of His word: قُلْ لا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ عِنْدِي خَزَائِنُ اللَّهِ وَلا أَعْلَمُ الْغَيْبَ وَلا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِنِّي مَلَكٌ إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلا مَا يُوحَى إِلَيَّ قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الأَعْمَى وَالْبَصِيرُ أَفَلا تَتَفَكَّرُونَ (50) ("Say: 'I do not say to you that I possess the treasuries of Allah, nor that I know the unseen (al-ghayb), nor do I say to you that I am an angel. I follow only what is revealed to me.' Say: 'Are the blind and the seeing equal? Do you then not reflect?'") (50)

Abū Jaʿfar said: He, exalted is His mention, says: say to these who deny your prophethood: I do not say to you that I am the Lord who possesses the treasuries of the heavens and the earth, and who knows the hidden things of the concealed matters that none knows except the Lord from whom nothing is hidden — so that you might contradict me in what I say; for it does not befit anyone to be Lord except the One who possesses sovereignty over all things, in whose hand all things lie, and from whom nothing remains hidden. And that is Allah, besides whom there is no god. "Nor do I say to you that I am an angel," because it does not befit an angel to show himself visibly in his form to the gazes of people in the worldly life — so that you might deny what I tell you thereof. "I follow only what is revealed to me" — He says: say to them: in that which I say to you and to which I call you, I follow only the revelation (waḥy) of Allah which He reveals to me, and His sending down which He sends down upon me; I carry out His revelation and obey His command. And I have brought you the conclusive proofs of Allah which remove your excuse regarding the correctness of my word therein. And that which I say thereof is not, in your understanding, objectionable, nor is its existence impossible; rather, that — together with the existence of the proof for its truth — is the exalted wisdom. What then is the ground of your denial of it?

And that is an indication from Allah, exalted is He, to His Prophet ﷺ as to the manner of his argument against the deniers of his prophethood among the polytheists (mushrikīn) of his people.

"Say: 'Are the blind and the seeing equal?'" — He, exalted is His mention, says: say, O Muḥammad, to them: are the one blind to the truth and the one seeing it equal? "The blind" is the unbeliever (kāfir) who has become blind to the proofs of Allah, so that he does not discern them and does not follow them; "the seeing" is the believer who has beheld the signs and proofs of Allah, has directed himself toward them, and has let himself be illuminated by their light. "Do you then not reflect?" — He says to these who have denied the signs of Allah: do you then not reflect upon that with which I argue against you, O people, of these proofs, so that you might know the correctness of what I say and to which I call you, and the corruptness of that in which you persist, namely the ascribing of partners (shirk) to Allah, your Lord, in the form of idols and equals, and your denial of me despite the manifestness of the proofs of my truthfulness before your eyes? So that you might leave the unbelief in which you persist for that to which I call you, namely the faith by which you triumph?

And in accordance with what we have said in the explanation thereof, a group of the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.

    Mention of who said that:

13252 — Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah, exalted is His mention: "Say: 'Are the blind and the seeing equal?'", he said: the misguided one and the rightly guided one.

13253 — al-Muthannā related to me, he said: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, he said: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, the like of it.

13254 — Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda concerning His word "Say: 'Are the blind and the seeing equal?'", the verse, he said: "the blind" is the unbeliever who has become blind to the truth of Allah, His command, and His blessings upon him; and "the seeing" is the believing servant who saw in a profitable manner, so that he acknowledged Allah as One, acted according to the obedience of his Lord, and benefited from that which Allah has given him.
