And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.

The explanation of His word: وَأَنَّ هَذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَلا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ ذَلِكُمْ وَصَّاكُمْ بِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ ("And that this is My path, straight; so follow it, and do not follow the [other] ways, for they will cause you to stray from His way. That He has enjoined upon you, so that you might fear [Allah]") (6:153).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: And this, which your Lord has enjoined upon you, O people, in these two verses, beginning from His word قُلْ تَعَالَوْا أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ ("Say: Come, I will recite to you what your Lord has forbidden you"), and which He has commanded you to abide by — that is "His path," meaning: His way and His religion which He has chosen for His servants — (straight), meaning: straight, without any deviation from the truth — (so follow it), He says: act upon it, and make it a trodden path for yourselves which you walk upon, and follow it — (and do not follow the [other] ways), He says: do not walk any way that lies outside it, and do not tread any other beaten path, and do not seek any religion that contradicts it, of Judaism, Christianity, Magianism, the worship of idols, and other creeds, for those are innovations (bidʿa) and errors — (for they will cause you to stray from His way), He says: your following of them will scatter you apart, if you follow the newly invented ways which for Allah are no ways, no paths, and no religions — "from His way," meaning: from His path and His religion which He has prescribed and chosen for you, and that is Islam with which He charged the prophets and which He enjoined upon the communities before you — (that He has enjoined upon you), the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: this, which your Lord has enjoined upon you with His word to you: "that this is My path, straight; so follow it and do not follow the [other] ways," that He has enjoined upon you "so that you might fear [Allah]," He says: so that you might fear Allah concerning yourselves and not destroy them, and so that you might fear your Lord regarding that and not provoke His wrath over it, lest His vengeance and His punishment (ʿadhāb) descend upon you.
And in agreement with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

14163 - Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah (and do not follow the [other] ways, for they will cause you to stray from His way): he said: the innovations (bidʿa) and the ambiguities.
14164 - Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: Abū Usāma related to us, on the authority of Shibl, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, the like of it.
14165 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: (and do not follow the [other] ways): the innovations and the ambiguities.
14166 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, [concerning] His word (so follow it and do not follow the [other] ways, for they will cause you to stray from His way), and His word: أَنْ أَقِيمُوا الدِّينَ وَلا تَتَفَرَّقُوا فِيهِ ("that you uphold the religion and do not become divided therein") [Sūrat al-Shūrā: 13], and what resembles this in the Qurʾān. He said: Allah has commanded the believers to maintain unity (jamāʿa), and has forbidden them dispute and division, and He has informed them that only those who came before them perished through disputations and quarrels over the religion of Allah.
14167 - Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, [concerning] His word (and do not follow the [other] ways, for they will cause you to stray from His way): he says: do not follow the errors.
14168 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: al-Ḥimmānī related to us, saying: Ḥammād related to us, on the authority of ʿĀṣim, on the authority of Abū Wāʾil, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a line for us one day and said: "This is the way of Allah." Then he drew [other] lines to the right and left of that line and said: "These are [by]ways, upon each of these ways there is a satan calling to it." Then he recited this verse: (and that this is My path, straight; so follow it and do not follow the [other] ways, for they will cause you to stray from His way).
14169 - Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word (and that this is My path, straight; so follow it and do not follow the [other] ways, for they will cause you to stray from His way), he said: "His way" is Islam, and "His path" is Islam. He forbade them to follow ways other than this — (for they will cause you to stray from His way), from Islam.
14170 - Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Abān: that a man said to Ibn Masʿūd: What is the straight path (al-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm)? He said: Muḥammad ﷺ left us at its beginning, while its end is in Paradise; on its right hand are broad ways, and on its left hand are broad ways, and there are men there calling [to themselves] everyone who passes by them. Whoever takes those broad ways, they will lead him to the Fire, and whoever takes the [straight] path, it will lead him to Paradise. Then Ibn Masʿūd recited: (and that this is My path, straight), the verse.
Abū Jaʿfar said: The reciters differed in the reading of His word (wa-anna hādhā ṣirāṭī mustaqīman).
The general body of reciters of Medina and Basra and some of those of Kūfa read it: (wa-anna), with a fatḥa on the "alif" of "anna" and a doubling (tashdīd) of the "nūn," as a connection to His word أَلا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ("that you associate nothing with Him"), with the meaning: قُلْ تَعَالَوْا أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَلا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ("Say: Come, I will recite to you what your Lord has forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him"), "and that this is My path, straight."
And the general body of reciters of Kūfa read it: (wa-inna), with a kasra on the "alif" of "anna" and a doubling of its "nūn," as a fresh beginning of the sentence (ibtidāʾ) and as a severance of it from what precedes, since in their view the utterance had already ended with the report about the injunction that Allah had given His servants apart from it.
Abū Jaʿfar said: The correct judgment concerning this is, in my view, that they are two widespread readings among the reciters of the regions and the generality of the Muslims, both meanings of which are correct; whichever of the two readings the reciter recites with, he attains the truth in his recitation.
That is because Allah, the Exalted whose mention is exalted, commanded [His servants] to follow His way, just as He commanded His servants the prophets. And if anyone takes this as belonging to what Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ to say to the polytheists: تَعَالَوْا أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ ("Come, I will recite to you what your Lord has forbidden you") and what He has enjoined upon you, and on that basis reads the "anna" with fatḥa, then he attains what is correct. And if he reads it with kasra — since the "tilāwa" (recitation/reading aloud) is an utterance, even though it is not with the word "qawl" (saying) — on account of its remoteness from His word "atlu" (I will recite), while intending that word [atlu] to govern it, then he likewise attains what is correct. And if he reads it with kasra with the meaning of a fresh beginning and a severance from what precedes and from the "tilāwa," and [with the notion] that what the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to recite to those to whom he was to recite it had already ended before that point, then he [also] attains what is correct.
And ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Isḥāq al-Baṣrī read it: (wa-an), with a fatḥa on the "alif" of "an" and a lightening (takhfīf, without doubling) of its "nūn," with the meaning: قُلْ تَعَالَوْا أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَلا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ("Say: Come, I will recite to you what your Lord has forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him"), "and that this is My path" — he lightened it [the nūn], since the "an" in His word أَلا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا is light, and the "an" in His word (wa-an hādhā ṣirāṭī) is connected to it, so he made it conform to that to which it is connected.
And although that is an [grammatical] approach, I prefer not to recite with it, on account of its departure from the reading of the reciters of the regions and its contradiction of that which they adhere to in their regions.
