The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: إِنَّ مَا تُوعَدُونَ لآتٍ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ بِمُعْجِزِينَ ("Verily, what you are promised will surely come, and you cannot prevent it") (6:134).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to the polytheists (mushrikīn) who ascribe partners to Him: O you who set up alongside Allah the idols and the false deities, that which your Lord promises you of punishment for your persistence in your disbelief (kufr) will surely befall you. And you cannot prevent it — He says: You will never thwart your Lord by fleeing from Him across the earth and thus escaping Him, for wherever you are, you are within His grasp, and He is able to reach you and to punish you for your disobedience to Him. He therefore says: So be on your guard against Him and return repentant to obedience to Him, before the trial descends upon you.
