    The explanation of His word: فَكُلُوا مِمَّا ذُكِرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ بِآيَاتِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ (118)

("So eat of that over which the name of Allah has been pronounced, if you are believers in His signs." (6:118))

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says to His prophet Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — and to His servants who believe in Him and in His signs: "fa-kulū" ("so eat"), O you believers, of that which you have ritually slaughtered of your slaughter-animals and what you have slaughtered in the manner of slaughtering of which I have explained to you that by it the slaughter-animal becomes lawful for you, and that is what is slaughtered by those who believe in Me, belonging to the adherents of your religion, the religion of truth, or is slaughtered by whoever professes My oneness (tawḥīd) from among the People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb), not what is slaughtered by the worshippers of the idols and by whoever has no Book, from among the Magians (al-majūs) = "in kuntum bi-āyātihi muʾminīn" ("if you are believers in His signs"), He says: if you are believers in the proofs of Allah that have come to you and His signs, in permitting what I have permitted you and forbidding what I have forbidden you of nourishments and foods, and abandon what the devils (al-shayāṭīn) whisper to one another among themselves of adorned words in order to mislead you and to veil your religion for you with deception.

And ʿAṭāʾ used to say concerning this what follows:-

13790 - Muḥammad ibn Bashshār and Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā related this to us, both of them saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: I said to ʿAṭāʾ concerning His word: "fa-kulū mimmā dhukira ismu Allāhi ʿalayh" ("so eat of that over which the name of Allah has been pronounced"), he said: He commands the pronouncing of His name over the drink and the food and the slaughtering. And over everything that gives occasion for His remembrance He commands it.
