Tafseer of The Cattle · Al-An'aam · 6:114

[Say], "Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge while it is He who has revealed to you the Book explained in detail?" And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so never be among the doubters.

The explanation of the saying: "Shall I then seek a judge other than Allah, when it is He who has sent down to you the Book, set forth in detail?"

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad (the Prophet ﷺ): Say to these who set up idols and statues as equals to Allah, who say to you, "Cease from our gods, and we will cease from your god": Allah has commanded me to mention your gods in a manner that deters from their worship. "Shall I then seek a judge other than Allah" — that is to say: say: it does not befit me to transgress and overstep His judgment, for there is no judge more just than He, nor any speaker more truthful than He. "When it is He who has sent down to you the Book, set forth in detail" — by this He means the Qurʾān. "Set forth in detail" — by this He means: in which is made clear the ruling concerning that over which you dispute regarding my affair and your affair.

And we have already explained earlier the meaning of "the detailed exposition (al-tafṣīl)."

The explanation of the saying: "And those to whom We have given the Book know that it has been sent down with the truth from your Lord; so do not be among the doubters." (6:114)

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: if these among your people who set up idols as equals to Allah deny the oneness of Allah, and assign to Him peers as associates, and reject that which I have sent down to you, and deny that it should be truth and repudiate it — then those to whom We have given the Book, namely the Torah and the Gospel, from the children of Israel, know "that it has been sent down from your Lord," that is to say: the Qurʾān and what is in it. "With the truth" — He says: as a distinction between the people of truth and the people of falsehood, which points to the truthfulness of the truthful one in Allah's knowledge, and the mendacity of the liar who fabricates against Him. "So do not be among the doubters" — He says: so do not be, O Muḥammad, among those who doubt the truth of the reports that have come to you from Allah in this Book, and the rest of what it contains, for those to whom We have given the Book know that it has been sent down with the truth from your Lord.

And we have already set forth earlier the import of His saying: "So do not be among the doubters," in a manner that makes repetition unnecessary, together with the report that has been transmitted concerning it. And indeed:

13788- Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, concerning His saying: "So do not be among the doubters" — He says: be not in doubt concerning that which We have related to you.
