وَلِتَصْغَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَفْـِٔدَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَلِيَرْضَوْهُ وَلِيَقْتَرِفُوا۟ مَا هُم مُّقْتَرِفُونَ

And [it is] so the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will incline toward it and that they will be satisfied with it and that they will commit that which they are committing.

    The word concerning the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: وَلِتَصْغَى إِلَيْهِ أَفْئِدَةُ الَّذِينَ لا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالآخِرَةِ وَلِيَرْضَوْهُ (And so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it, and that they may take pleasure in it.)

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is sublime, says: وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَاطِينَ الإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ زُخْرُفَ الْقَوْلِ غُرُورًا (And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy: the devils of mankind and the jinn, who inspire one another with embellished words as a deception) — "and so that it may incline toward it" — He, whose praise is sublime, says: some of these devils inspire others with the speech embellished with falsehood, so that they may thereby deceive the believers among the followers of the prophets and turn them away from their religion — "and so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it" — he says: and so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline themselves toward it.

    * * *

    — And it is derived from "ṣaghawtu, taṣghā and taṣghū." And the revelation came with "taṣghā" — "ṣaghwan and ṣughuwwan." And some of the Arabs say "ṣaghaytu" with the yāʾ. It is related from some of the Banū Asad: "ṣaghaytu toward his words, so I incline (uṣghā) ṣughiyyan" with the yāʾ, and that is when one inclines. One says: "my inclination (ṣaghwī) is with you," when your affection is with him and your inclination, like their saying: "my rib (ḍilaʿī) is with you." And one says: "aṣghaytu the bowl" when one tilts it so that what is in it may gather; and from that is the saying of the poet:

    You see the fool, through him, deviating from every established judgment, and in him is, toward likening, an inclination (iṣghāʾ).

    And one says of the moon when it inclines toward setting: "ṣaghā" and "aṣghā."

    * * *

    And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

    13781 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: (and so that the hearts may incline toward it) — he says: so that the hearts may deviate toward it.

    13782 - Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, saying: Ibn ʿAbbās said concerning His statement: (and so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it) — he said: so that they may incline.

    13783 - Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: (and so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it) — he says: the hearts of the unbeliever (kāfir) incline toward it, and they love it, and they take pleasure in it.

    13784 - Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: (and so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it) — he said: "wa-li-taṣghā," and so that they may desire that and take pleasure in it. He said: the man says of the woman: "ṣaghaytu toward her," I desired her.

    The word concerning the explanation of His statement: وَلِيَقْتَرِفُوا مَا هُمْ مُقْتَرِفُونَ (113) (And so that they may acquire what they acquire) (6:113)

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is sublime, says: and so that they may acquire of deeds what they acquire.

    * * *

    It is related from the Arabs, heard from them: "he went out to acquire (yaqtarif) for his family," in the meaning of: to acquire for them. And from that it is said: "so-and-so has committed (qārafa) this matter," when he perpetrated and did it. And some of them said: it is the accusation and the imputation. One says to the man: "you have accused me (qaraftanī)," that is: you have suspected me. And one says: "how evil is what you have acquired (iqtaraft) for yourself," and Ruʾba said:

    The acquisition of the fabricated lie (al-maqrūf) has proven powerless against the piety of the God-fearing and the chastity of the chaste.

    * * *

    And in accordance with what we have said in the explanation of His statement (and so that they may acquire), the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

    13785 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: (and so that they may acquire what they acquire), and so that they may acquire what they acquire.

    13786 - Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: (and so that they may acquire what they acquire) — he said: so that they may do what they do.

    13787 - Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: (and so that they may acquire what they acquire) — he said: so that they may do what they do.
