The explanation of His word: قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الأَرْضِ ثُمَّ انْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ (11) ("Say: Travel through the earth and then see how the end was of those who denied [the truth]") (6:11).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: "Say," O Muḥammad — to these who equate the idols and the associate-partners with Me, who deny you and who reject the truth of what you have brought them from My side — "Travel through the earth," that is to say: journey about through the lands of those who denied their messengers and who before them rejected My signs, their likes and counterparts among the people — "then see how the end was of those who denied," that is to say: then see how their denial brought upon them as its consequence: destruction, ruin, the disgrace and ignominy of the worldly life, and what struck them of the wrath of Allah upon them, in the form of annihilation, the laying waste of the dwelling-places and the effacing of the traces. Take therefrom a lesson, if your reason does not restrain you and the proofs of Allah against you do not deter you from the denial in which you [persist in hardness]. So guard yourselves against the like of their places of ruin, and be wary lest there strike you the same as what struck them.

Qatāda used to say concerning this, as follows:
13095 — Bishr ibn Muʿādh related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: "Say: Travel through the earth and then see how the end was of those who denied," he said: Allah annihilated them and brought them to ruin, and then caused them to end up in the Fire.
