The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: اتَّبِعْ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ (106) ("Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord; there is no god but He, and turn away from the polytheists (mushrikīn)" (6:106)).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Follow, O Muḥammad, what your Lord has charged you with in His revelation which He has revealed to you; act according to it, and keep far from that against which He has warned you therein, and abandon that to which the polytheists of your people invite you, namely the worship of the idol-images and the idols, for there is no god but He. He says: There is no worshipped being that deserves that you keep worship pure for him, except Allah, who is the Cleaver of the grain and the kernel, and the Cleaver of the daybreak, and who has made the night for rest, and the sun and the moon for a [fixed] reckoning — وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ("and turn away from the polytheists"). He says: and abandon their wrangling and their bickering.
Then He, exalted is His praise, abrogated that with His statement in [sūrat] Barāʾa: فَاقْتُلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْ ("Then kill the polytheists wherever you find them"), the [whole] āya [sūrat al-Tawba: 5]. As [in the following]:
13736 — Al-Muthannā related to me, he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: As for His statement وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ("and turn away from the polytheists") and the like, by which Allah commanded the believers to pardon the polytheists — that is abrogated by His statement: فَاقْتُلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْ ("Then kill the polytheists wherever you find them").
