The explanation of the words of the Most High: "Neither their possessions nor their children will avail them anything against Allah. They are the inhabitants of the Fire; therein they will abide eternally." (58:17)
The Most High, whose praise is exalted, says: on the Day of Resurrection the possessions of these hypocrites will not avail them, such that they could ransom themselves thereby from the humiliating punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah, nor will their children avail them, such that these could help them and could snatch them away from Allah when He punishes them. "They are the inhabitants of the Fire," He says: these who took as allies a people with whom Allah is angry — and they are the hypocrites — are the inhabitants of the Fire, that is to say its people, who will abide therein eternally. He says: they will remain in the Fire, abiding unto infinity.
