إِنَّ ٱلْمُصَّدِّقِينَ وَٱلْمُصَّدِّقَٰتِ وَأَقْرَضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًۭا يُضَٰعَفُ لَهُمْ وَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ

Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.

    And His statement: إِنَّ الْمُصَّدِّقِينَ وَالْمُصَّدِّقَاتِ ("Indeed, the men who give alms and the women who give alms"). The reciters differed over its reading. Most of the reciters of the regions, with the exception of Ibn Kathīr and ʿĀṣim, read it with doubling (tashdīd) of the ṣād and the dāl, with the meaning that they are "the men and women who give alms (al-mutaṣaddiqīn wa-l-mutaṣaddiqāt)," whereby the tāʾ is then assimilated into the ṣād, so that it becomes a doubled ṣād, as has been said: يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ ("O you who are enwrapped"), by which al-mutazammil (the one wrapped in a garment) is meant. And Ibn Kathīr and ʿĀṣim read: إنَّ المُتَصَدّقِينَ والمُتَصدّقاتِ ("Indeed, the men who affirm the truth and the women who affirm the truth") with lightening (takhfīf) of the ṣād and doubling of the dāl, with the meaning: indeed, those who have believed Allah and His Messenger and held them to be true.

    The correct of the two views on this, in my opinion, is that one says: they are two well-known readings, and the meaning of each of them is sound, so with whichever of the two the reciter recites, he has hit upon what is correct.

    The explanation of the word, according to the reading of the one who reads it with doubling in the two letters — I mean in the ṣād and the dāl — is thus: that the men who give alms from their possessions and the women who do so, وَأَقْرَضُوا اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ("and have lent to Allah a goodly loan"), that is to say: by spending in His way, and in that which He has commanded to be spent, or in that to which He has urged, يُضَاعَفُ لَهُمْ وَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ ("it will be multiplied for them, and for them is a noble reward"). He says: Allah multiplies for them their loans which they have lent to Him, and pays them their reward for it in full on the Day of Resurrection. وَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ ("and for them is a noble reward"). He says: and for them is from Allah a reward for their sincerity and their loans to Him, a noble reward, and that is the Garden (janna).

    وقوله: ( إِنَّ الْمُصَّدِّقِينَ وَالْمُصَّدِّقَاتِ )، اختلفت القرّاء في قراءة ذلك، فقرأته عامه قرّاء الأمصار، خلا ابن كثير وعاصم بتشديد الصاد والدال، بمعنى أن المتصدِّقين والمتصدِّقات، ثم تُدغم التاء في الصاد، فتجعلها صادا مشدّدة، كما قيل: يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ يعني المتزمل. وقرأ ابن كثير وعاصم: ( إنَّ المُتَصَدّقِينَ والمُتَصدّقاتِ ) بتخفيف الصاد وتشديد الدال، بمعنى: إن الذين صدقوا الله ورسوله. وأولى الأقوال في ذلك بالصواب عندي أن يقال: إنهما قراءتان معروفتان، صحيح معنى كلّ واحدة منهما، فبأيتهما قرأ القارئ فمصيب. فتأويل الكلام إذن على قراءة من قرأ ذلك بالتشديد في الحرفين، أعني في الصاد والدال: أن المتصدّقين من أموالهم والمتصدّقات، ( وَأَقْرَضُوا اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ) يعني: بالنفقة في سبيله، وفيما أمر بالنفقة فيه، أو فيما ندب إليه، ( يُضَاعَفُ لَهُمْ وَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ ) يقول: يضاعف الله لهم قروضهم التي أقرضوها إياه، فيوفيهم ثوابها يوم القيامة، ( وَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ ) يقول: ولهم ثواب من الله على صدقهم، وقروضهم إياه كريم، وذلك الجنة.
