And you are at that time looking on -

﴿وَأَنْتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُونَ﴾ (and you at that moment are looking on) — He says: and whoever of you of his family is present with them is looking at them at that moment. The address here is directed generally to all, while what is meant is: the one of his family and others who is present with the dying person. That is known from the language of the Arabs, namely that one addresses a group with the action as though they were his family and companions, while only a part of them is meant by it — whether absent or present. Thus one says: "You killed so-and-so," while the perpetrator is only one of them, whether absent or present. We have already expounded the likes of this in many places in this our book.
