   His statement: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"). Allah, exalted is His mention, says: that concealed Book none touches except those whom Allah has purified from sins.

   The scholars of exegesis differed concerning who is meant by His statement: إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("except the purified"). Some of them said: they are the angels.

   Mention of who said that:

   Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: when Allah wills to send down a Book, the scribes (angels) transcribe it, and then none touches it except the purified; he said: by this the angels are meant.

   Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Abī Rāshid, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: the angels who are in heaven.

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Abī Rāshid, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: the angels.

   Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Ibn Yamān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Abī Rāshid, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: the angels.

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of ʿĀṣim, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: the angels.

   Others said: they are the bearers of the Torah and the Gospel.

   Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm related to me, saying: Marwān related to us, saying: ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal informed us, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya al-Riyāḥī, concerning His statement: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: it is not you; you are the people with sins.

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: the angels, the prophets, and the messengers who descend with it from Allah are purified, and the prophets are purified; Jibrīl descends with it as one purified, and the messengers to whom it comes are purified. That is His statement: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"). And the angels, the prophets, and the messengers — the messengers from among the angels and the messengers from among the children of Adam — these descend with it as purified ones, and these recite it to the people as purified ones. And he recited the word of Allah: بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ * كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ ("by the hands of scribes, noble and dutiful") (80:15–16); he said: by the hands of the angels who record the deeds of the people.

   Others said: by it is meant that none touches it with Allah except the purified.

   * Mention of who said that:

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), that is with the Lord of the worlds; but among you the impure polytheist (mushrik) touches it and the filthy hypocrite (munāfiq).

   Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("which none touch except the purified"), he said: none touches it with Allah except the purified; but in this world the impure Magian (majūsī) touches it and the filthy hypocrite (munāfiq). And he said: in the reading of Ibn Masʿūd it is ما يَمَسُّهُ إلا المُطَهَّرُونَ ("nothing touches it except the purified").

   And the correct view concerning that, according to us, is that Allah, exalted is His praise, has informed that none touches the concealed Book except the purified, and He has by His report encompassed all the purified and has not excepted some to the exclusion of others. The angels are among the purified, the messengers and the prophets are among the purified, and everyone who is purified from sins is among those excepted and intended by His statement إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ("except the purified").

   قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: لا يمسّ ذلك الكتاب المكنون إلا الذين قد طهَّرهم الله من الذنوب. واختلف أهل التأويل في الذين عنوا بقوله: ( إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) فقال بعضهم: هم الملائكة. ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قال: إذا أراد الله أن ينـزل كتابا نسخته السفرة، فلا يمسه إلا المطهرون، قال: يعني الملائكة. حدثنا ابن بشار، قال: ثنا عبد الرحمن، قال: ثنا سفيان، عن الربيع بن أبي راشد، عن سعيد بن جبير ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: الملائكة الذين في السماء. حدثنا ابن حُميد، قال: ثنا مهران، عن سفيان، عن الربيع بن أبي راشد، عن سعيد بن جبير ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: الملائكة. حدثنا أبو كُريب، قال: ثنا ابن يمان، عن سفيان، عن الربيع بن أبي راشد، عن سعيد بن جبير ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: الملائكة. حدثنا ابن حُميد، قال: ثنا يحيى بن واضح، قال: ثنا عبيد الله، يعني العتكي، عن جبار بن زيد وأبي نهيك في قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) يقول: الملائكة. قال: ثنا مهران، عن سفيان، عن أبيه، عن عكرِمة ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال الملائكة. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى؛ وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعًا، عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، في قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال الملائكة. حدثنا ابن حُميد، قال: ثنا جرير، عن عاصم، عن أبي العالية ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: الملائكة. وقال آخرون: هم حملة التوراة والإنجيل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا أبو كُريب، قال: ثنا ابن يمان، عن سفيان، عن أبيه، عن عكرِمة ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: حملة التوراة والإنجيل. وقال آخرون في ذلك: هم الذين قد طهروا من الذنوب كالملائكة والرسل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني يعقوب بن إبراهيم، قال: ثنا مروان، قال: أخبرنا عاصم الأحول، عن أبي العالية الرياحي، في قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: ليس أنتم أنتم أصحاب الذنوب. حدثني يونس، قال أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد في قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال: الملائكة والأنبياء والرسل التي تنـزل به من عند الله مطهرة، والأنبياء مطهرة، فجبريل ينـزل به مُطَهَّر، والرسل الذين تجيئهم به مُطَهَّرون فذلك قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) والملائكة والأنبياء والرسل من الملائكة، والرسل من بني آدم، فهؤلاء ينـزلون به مطهرون، وهؤلاء يتلونه على الناس مطهرون، وقرأ قول الله بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ * كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ قال: بأيدي الملائكة الذين يحصون على الناس أعمالهم. وقال آخرون: عني بذلك: أنه لا يمسه عند الله إلا المطهرون. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) ذاكم عند ربّ العالمين، فأما عندكم فيمسه المشرك النجس، والمنافق الرَّجِس. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة، قوله: ( لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) قال لا يمسه عند الله إلا المطهرون، فأما في الدنيا فإنه يمسه المجوسيّ النجس، والمنافق الرجس. وقال في حرف ابن مسعود ( ما يَمَسُّهُ إلا المُطَهَّرُونَ ). والصواب من القول من ذلك عندنا، أن الله جلّ ثناؤه، أخبر أنه لا يمس الكتاب المكنون إلا المطهرون فعمّ بخبره المطهرين، ولم يخصص بعضًا دون بعض؛ فالملائكة من المطهرين، والرسل والأنبياء من المطهرين وكل من كان مطهرًا من الذنوب، فهو ممن استثني، وعني بقوله: ( إِلا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ ) .
