And His word: (Had We willed, We would have made it salty [ujājan]) — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: Had We willed, We would have made that water which We have sent down upon you from the clouds salty, and that is ujāj; and ujāj water is water whose saltiness is severe. He says: had We willed, We would have done that with it, so that you would have no benefit from it, neither for drinking, nor for planting, nor for sowing.
And His word: (So why are you not grateful?) — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: So why do you not thank your Lord for the sweet water which He has bestowed upon you to drink, for your needs and for the welfare of your livelihood, and because He has refrained from making it salty so that you would have no benefit from it?
