Rather, we have been deprived."

His statement: bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn ("nay, we are deprived"). The Exalted, glorified be His mention, means thereby that they say: our harvest has not perished and the calamity has not befallen us because innā la-mughramūn ("indeed we are laden with loss"), but rather we are a deprived people. He says: they are bereft of good fortune, they have no prosperity.
And in agreement with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of interpretation have spoken.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn, he said: we have become bereft of good fortune and thus deprived.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his statement: bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn, he said: that is to say: those bereft of prosperity.
