Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

And His saying: إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ("Verily, before that they were given to luxury"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: verily, these whose attribute He has described, namely the companions of the left side, were — before there befell them of the punishment of Allah what befell them — in this world mutrafīn, that is to say: living in luxury.
As ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ("Verily, before that they were given to luxury"), he says: living in luxury.
