Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

Then He began the account of what He has prepared for them in Paradise (al-janna), and how their state will be when they enter it. He said: they are فِي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ ("amid thornless lote-trees"), that is: amid the fruit of a lote-tree, laden with produce, whose thorns have been removed.

The people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have differed concerning its interpretation. Some of them said: by "makhḍūd" is meant: that whose thorns have been pruned away, so that no thorn remains on it.

    * Mention of who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ , he said: its thorns have been pruned away and it is laden with produce. And it is said: it has been pruned until its thorns were gone, so that no thorn remains on it.

And Ibn Ḥumayd related it to me another time, on the authority of Mihrān, with the same isnād, on the authority of ʿIkrima, and he said: it has no thorn, and it is the laden one.

And others said: rather, what is meant by it is that it is heavily laden with produce.
