And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.

His saying: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ) — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: and He created the jinn from a flame (mārij) of fire, and that is what intermingles with itself, of red and yellow and green. This is derived from their saying: "it has become marija among those people" when something has become intermixed, and from the saying of the Prophet ﷺ to ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr: "How will it be with you when you find yourself amid the dregs of mankind, whose covenants and trusts have become intermixed (marijat)! And that is the flame of the fire and its tongue."
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf al-Jubayrī Abū Ḥafṣ related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Kathīr related to us, saying: Muslim related to us, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His saying: ( from a flame of fire ) — he said: from the middle and the best part of it.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, His saying: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ) — he says: He created him from the flame of the fire, from the best of the fire.
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, His saying: ( from a flame of fire ) — he says: the pure part of the fire.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd related to us, saying: Bishr ibn ʿUmāra related to us, on the authority of Abū Rawq, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: The jinn mentioned in the Qurʾān were created from a flame of fire, and that is the tongue of the fire that is at its edge when it blazes up.
Hannād related to us, saying: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ related to us, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning His saying: ( from a flame of fire ) — he said: from the best of the fire.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His saying: ( from a flame of fire ) — he said: the yellow and green flame that rises above the fire when it is kindled.
And al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, the same, except that he said: and the red.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ) — he said: it is the severed red flame.
He said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, concerning His saying: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ) — he said: the best of the fire.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd informed us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His saying: ( from a flame of fire ) — he said: from the flame of the fire.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, His saying: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ): that is to say, from the flame of the fire.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning His saying: ( from a flame of fire ) — he said: from the flame of the fire.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ) — he said: the mārij is the flame.
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Marwān related to us, saying: Abū al-ʿAwwām related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( And He created the jinn from a flame of fire ) — he said: from a flame of fire.
