And His statement Or do they say: "We are a group helping one another and victorious" (54:44) — the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: Do these unbelievers of Quraysh say: We are together a group that prevails over whoever intends evil and harm against us and who desires war against us and the scattering of our community? Then Allah, whose praise is exalted, said: The group will be defeated — that is to say: the group of the unbelievers of Quraysh — and they will turn their backs (54:45). He says: and they will turn their backs upon those who believe in Allah, fleeing away from them. It has been said: "the back" (al-dubr) is in the singular while the plural meaning is intended, as one says "we struck their head," that is to say: we struck their heads, since the singular can convey the meaning of its plural. Then Allah, the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, fulfilled His promise to those who believe in Him, and through it defeated the polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh on the day of Badr, and they turned their backs upon them.
