And His statement فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ "How then was My punishment (ʿadhāb) and My warnings?" — He, exalted be His praise, says to the Quraysh: How then was My punishment of them, O assembly of the Quraysh, when I punished them? Did I not destroy them by the earthquake? And "My warnings" (nudhur) — He says: How then was My warning to the communities whom I warned after them by means of what I did with them and the punishment that I brought upon them?
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement فَتَعَاطَى فَعَقَرَ "then he took hold and hamstrung her" — he said: he took hold of her with his hand. فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ "How then was My punishment and My warnings?" — he said: it is said that he was a child of fornication (walad zinya); he was among the nine who spread corruption on the earth and did no good, and they are the ones who said to Ṣāliḥ: لَنُبَيِّتَنَّهُ وَأَهْلَهُ "We will surely attack him and his family by night" — and they said: and we will surely kill them.
