Explanation of the saying of the Exalted: وَكَذَّبُوا وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُسْتَقِرٌّ ("And they denied and followed their desires, and every matter is settled") (3)

He, exalted is His mention, says: and these polytheists (mushrikīn) of the Quraysh denied the signs of Allah after their reality had come to them and they had beheld the proof of its validity through their seeing the moon split into two pieces. وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ("and they followed their desires"); He says: and they preferred following that to which the desires of their souls called them — namely, denying it — over holding to be true that whose validity they already knew with certainty, namely the prophethood of Muḥammad ﷺ and the reality of that with which he had come to them from their Lord.

And His saying وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُسْتَقِرٌّ ("and every matter is settled"); He, exalted is His mention, says: and every matter, whether it be good or evil, has its fixed abode and its final destination. The good has its fixed abode with its people in the Garden, and the evil has its fixed abode with its people in the Fire.

As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His saying وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُسْتَقِرٌّ ("and every matter is settled"): that is to say: with the people of good, the good, and with the people of evil, the evil.
