They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allah].

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ (26) ("They say: 'Formerly we were, in the midst of our family, full of fear'") (52:26)
He, exalted is His remembrance, says: they say to one another: indeed, we, O people, were in the midst of our family in the worldly life full of fear, fearful of the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah, apprehensive that our Lord would punish us this day.
