His statement إِنَّكُمْ لَفِي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍ (truly, you are in a contradictory utterance) means: Truly, you, O people, are in a contradictory utterance concerning this Qurʾān; some of you believe in it and others deny it.

As Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning إِنَّكُمْ لَفِي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍ (truly, you are in a contradictory utterance), he said: One person believes in this Qurʾān and another denies it.

Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement إِنَّكُمْ لَفِي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍ (truly, you are in a contradictory utterance): They fabricate lies; they say: This is sorcery, and they say: These are fables of the ancients. Which then of their utterances should one accept? Cursed are the fabricators of lies. This man — it must be one of these cases with him; why then do you not accept one of those cases, when you have labeled him with all sorts of claims? Which then of these utterances do you accept? It is a contradictory utterance. He said: He mentioned that they fabricated without having any knowledge of it, and said: What has prevented this Qurʾān from being sent down in the language in which the Books before you were sent down? Then Allah said: Non-Arabic and Arabic? Had We made this Qurʾān non-Arabic, you would say: We are Arabs and this Qurʾān is non-Arabic, how then can these go together?
