And in Thamud, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: وَفِي ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا حَتَّى حِينٍ (43) ("And in Thamūd, when it was said to them: 'Enjoy yourselves for a while'") (51:43)
He, exalted be His mention, says: and also in Thamūd there is a lesson and an admonition for them, when their Lord spoke to them. He says: they were arrogant toward the command of their Lord and behaved with great haughtiness, and exalted themselves with pride above obedience to Allah.
As Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us, all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word ( فَعَتَوْا ) ("they were arrogant"), he said: they exalted themselves.
