It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.

His statement: مَا تَذَرُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِيمِ ("It left nothing that it came upon, but it made it like al-ramīm" — (51:42)). Al-ramīm means, in the language of the Arabs: that which has withered of the plants of the earth and has been trampled.
In agreement with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken, even though their wordings differed in expressing it.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his statement مَا تَذَرُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِيمِ , he said: like the thing that has perished.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his statement كَالرَّمِيمِ , he said: like the thing that has perished.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda كَالرَّمِيمِ : the decayed remains of the tree.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his statement إِلا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِيمِ , he said: like the decayed remains of the tree.
