Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good.

His statement آخِذِينَ مَا آتَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ (taking what their Lord has given them) means — the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: acting upon what their Lord has commanded them, fulfilling His obligations (farāʾiḍ).
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Abū ʿUmar, on the authority of Muslim al-Baṭīn, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement آخِذِينَ مَا آتَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ (taking what their Lord has given them), he said: The obligations (al-farāʾiḍ).
And His statement إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ (verily, they were, before that, doers of good) means: Verily, they were, before the obligations were imposed upon them, doers of good. He says: They were, before that, obedient to Allah.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.
