The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ("Cursed be the conjecturers of lies") (10).
Allah, praised be His remembrance, says: Cursed be the soothsayers who conjecture lies and falsehood and who imagine them to be true.
The exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning who is meant by His statement ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ). Some of them said: by this are meant the doubters.
* Mention of who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ); he says: cursed be the doubters.
And others said concerning this the same as what we have said concerning it.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ); he said: the soothsayers.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ); he said: those who conjecture lies, like His statement in [Surah] ʿAbasa قُتِلَ الإِنْسَانُ ("Cursed be man"). And each of the two related to me with the isnād that I have mentioned on his authority, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ); he said: those who say: we shall not be resurrected, and who have no certainty.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ): the people of delusions and conjectures.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement ( قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ ); he said: the people who conjectured lies about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A group said: he is only a magician, and what he has brought is magic. And a group said: he is only a poet, and what he has brought is poetry. And a group said: he is only a soothsayer, and what he has brought is soothsaying. And a group said: أَسَاطِيرُ الأَوَّلِينَ اكْتَتَبَهَا فَهِيَ تُمْلَى عَلَيْهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلا ("Fables of the ancients which he has had written down, and which are dictated to him morning and evening") — they conjectured lies about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
