Tabari

Tafseer of The Table · Al-Maaida · 5:84

And why should we not believe in Allah and what has come to us of the truth? And we aspire that our Lord will admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people."

The discourse on the explanation of His statement: (5:84). (And why should we not believe in Allah and in what has come to us of the truth, while we long for our Lord to admit us along with the righteous people?)

Abū Jaʿfar said: This is a report from Allah, the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, concerning this people whose quality He has described in these verses, namely that they, when they hear what was sent down to His Messenger Muḥammad, the Prophet ﷺ, of His Book, believed in it and held the Book of Allah to be true, and said: "And why should we not believe in Allah," that is to say: why should we not acknowledge the oneness of Allah, "and in what has come to us of the truth," that is to say: and in what has come to us from Allah of His Book and the signs of His revelation, while through our belief therein we long for our Lord to admit us along with the righteous people.

By "the righteous people" He means: the believers in Allah, those obedient to Him, who through their obedience to Him have earned the paradise (janna) of Allah.

Its meaning is only: and we long for our Lord to admit us along with the people of His obedience, at their places of entry into His paradise on the Day of Resurrection, and that He join our dwellings to their dwellings and our ranks to their ranks in His gardens.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (taʾwīl) have spoken.

    Mention of who said that:

12335 - Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: "And why should we not believe in Allah and in what has come to us of the truth, while we long for our Lord to admit us along with the righteous people," he said: "The righteous people" is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions.
