The explanation of His word: أَفَلا يَتُوبُونَ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَهُ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (74)
(Will they then not turn in repentance to Allah and ask Him for forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (5:74))
Abū Jaʿfar said: He — exalted be His remembrance — says: Will these two disbelieving factions then not turn back — the one that says: "Truly, Allah is the Messiah, the son of Maryam", and the other that says: "Truly, Allah is the third of three" — from what both of them have said, and will they not turn in repentance away from what both of them have said and uttered of disbelief from them, and will they both not ask their Lord for forgiveness for what they have said? "And Allah is Forgiving" toward the sins of those among His creatures who repent and turn after their disobedience to His obedience, "Merciful" toward them, in accepting their repentance and their return to what He loves from what He detests, and He thereby forgives them what they have done, namely what preceded of their crimes before that time.
