Tafseer of The Table · Al-Maaida · 5:46
And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous.

The discourse on the explanation of His saying, mighty is His remembrance:
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, means by His saying "And We caused to follow in their footsteps": We caused to follow after. That is to say: We caused ʿĪsā, the son of Maryam, to follow in the footsteps of the prophets who had submitted before you, O Muḥammad, and We sent him as a prophet, confirming Our Book which We had sent down to Mūsā before him, that it is true, and that acting upon that which the Injīl has not abrogated of it is an obligatory duty — "and We gave him the Injīl", that is to say: and We sent down to him Our Book which is called "the Injīl", "in which is guidance and light", that is to say: in the Injīl there is "guidance", which is the clarification of that which the people did not know of the ruling of Allah in his time — "and light", that is to say: and an illumination against the blindness of ignorance — "and confirming what was before it", that is to say: We revealed it to him and sent it down to him in confirmation of what was before it of the Books of Allah, which He had sent down to every community to whose prophet a Book was sent down, so that they would act upon that which was sent down to their prophet in that Book, in permitting what He permitted and forbidding what He forbade —
"and as guidance and admonition", that is to say: We sent down the Injīl to ʿĪsā, confirming the Books that were before it, and as a clarification of the ruling of Allah which He was pleased with for His God-fearing servants in the time of ʿĪsā — "and admonition" for them — that is to say: and as a rebuke for them, away from that which Allah detests, toward that which He loves of deeds, and as an exhortation for them toward that.
And "the God-fearing" are those who feared Allah and were wary of His punishment, and so feared Him by obeying Him in that which He commanded them, and were wary of Him by abandoning that which He forbade them to do. The exposition of that, with its attestations, has already passed earlier, which dispenses us from repeating it.
