And His statement فَضْلا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَنِعْمَةً (as a bounty from Allah and a favor) — He says: rather, Allah has made faith beloved to you and granted you this favor, which He has reckoned as a bounty from Him, and as a benefaction and a favor from Him that He has bestowed upon you. وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ (and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise) — He says: and Allah is possessor of knowledge concerning which of you is the doer of good and which is the doer of evil, and who is worthy of the favor and bounty of Allah and who is unworthy of it, and possessor of wisdom in His disposal of His creatures and His ordaining for them what He wills of His decree.

And in agreement with what we have said in the exegesis of His statement (And know that the Messenger of Allah is among you; if he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would surely fall into hardship), the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda (And know that the Messenger of Allah is among you)... until he reached لَعَنِتُّمْ (you would surely fall into hardship): these are the companions of the prophet of Allah ﷺ; if the prophet of Allah were to obey them in much of the matter, you would fall into hardship. You are, therefore, by Allah, the weakest in opinion and the most frivolous in intellect. So a man distrusted his own opinion and accepted the counsel of the Book of Allah. And thus, as we have also said, in the exegesis of His statement وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ الإيمَانَ (but Allah has made faith beloved to you), they said.

    * Mention of who said that:

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ الإيمَانَ وَزَيَّنَهُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ (made faith beloved to you and beautified it in your hearts): He made it beloved to them and made it fair in their hearts.

And in agreement with what we have said in the exegesis of His statement وَكَرَّهَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الرَّاشِدُونَ * فَضْلا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَنِعْمَةً (and He has made disbelief, moral depravity, and disobedience hateful to you — they are the rightly guided ones — as a bounty from Allah and a favor), they likewise said.

    * Mention of who said that:

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement وَكَرَّهَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ (and made disbelief and moral depravity hateful to you): he said: lying and disobedience; he said: disobedience to the Prophet ﷺ. أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الرَّاشِدُونَ (they are the rightly guided ones) — from where did this come? He said: a bounty from Allah and a favor. He said: and the hypocrites (munāfiqūn) — Allah has named them all in the Qurʾān the liars. He said: and the morally depraved one (fāsiq) is the liar throughout the entire Book of Allah.
