The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: Voorwaar, de gelovigen zijn broeders; verzoent dus tussen jullie beide broeders, en vreest Allah, opdat jullie barmhartigheid mogen ontvangen. (49:10)
Allah, exalted is His mention, says to the people who believe in Him: Indeed, the believers are brothers in religion, so reconcile between your two brothers when they contend with one another, by bringing them to submit to the judgement of Allah and the judgement of His Messenger. The meaning of "the two brothers" in this place is: both contending parties among the believers. And it is in the dual form (bi-l-tathniya) that the reciters of the regions read this. It has been transmitted from Ibn Sīrīn that he read "between your brothers (bayna ikhwāni-kum)" with the nūn, according to the manner of the plural; and that is correct from the standpoint of the Arabic language, except that it contradicts that upon which the reciters of the regions rely, and therefore I do not like to recite according to that [reading]. And fear Allah, that you may receive mercy — Allah, exalted is His mention, says: and fear Allah, O people, by fulfilling His obligations that rest upon you in justly reconciling between the contending parties among the believers, and in others of His obligations, and by avoiding disobedience to Him, that your Lord may show mercy upon you and forgive you your past offences when you obey Him, follow His command and prohibition, and fear Him by obeying Him.
