His words ( ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ اتَّبَعُوا مَا أَسْخَطَ اللَّهَ ) That is because they followed what angered Allah — the Exalted, whose renown is great, says: the angels do this which I have described to these hypocrites because they followed what angered Allah, so that it provoked His wrath against them, namely obedience to Satan. ( وَكَرِهُوا رِضْوَانَهُ ) and they detested His good pleasure — He says: and they detested what would make Him pleased with them, namely fighting against the unbelievers (kāfir) by means of that, after He had made it obligatory upon them.

His words ( فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ ) so He rendered their works fruitless — He says: Allah made the reward of their works void and caused it to vanish, because they were performed for something other than His good pleasure and His love, and therefore they were void and did not benefit the one who performed them.
