Tafseer of Muhammad · Muhammad · 47:2

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَءَامَنُوا۟ بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍۢ وَهُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ ۙ كَفَّرَ عَنْهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ

And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.

    And it has been mentioned that by His statement ( الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ) ... — the āyah — the people of Mecca are meant, and by ( وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ ) ... — the āyah — the people of Medina.

    * Mention of who said that:

    Isḥāq ibn Wahb al-Wāsiṭī related to me, saying: ʿUbaydallāh ibn Mūsā related to us, saying: Isrāʾīl informed us, on the authority of Abū Yaḥyā al-Qattāt, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement ( الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ), he said: it was revealed concerning the people of Mecca. ( وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ ), he said: the Anṣār (the Helpers of Medina).

    And in accordance with what we have said concerning the meaning of His statement ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) ("and He sets their condition right"), the people of interpretation (the exegetes) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

    Isḥāq ibn Wahb al-Wāsiṭī related to me, saying: ʿUbaydallāh ibn Mūsā related to us, saying: Isrāʾīl related to us, on the authority of Abū Yaḥyā al-Qattāt, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿAbbās ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ), he said: their affair.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them together — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ), he said: their matter.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ), he said: He set their condition right.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ), he said: their condition.

    Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His statement ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ), he said: their condition. And "al-bāl" is like a maṣdar (verbal noun), like "al-shaʾn" (the affair), for which no verb is known, and the Arabs scarcely put it in the plural except in the necessity of poetry; when they do put it in the plural, they say "bālāt".

    وذُكر أنه عنى بقوله ( الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا )... الآية أهل مكة,( وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ )... الآية, أهل المدينة. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني إسحاق بن وهب الواسطي, قال: ثنا عبيد الله بن موسى, قال: خبرنا إسرائيل, عن أبي يحيى القتات, عن مجاهد, عن عبد الله بن عباس, في قوله ( الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ) قال: نـزلت في أهل مكة ( وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ ) قال: الأنصار. وبنحو الذي قلنا في معنى قوله ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني إسحاق بن وهب الواسطي, قال: ثنا عبيد الله بن موسى, قال: ثنا إسرائيل, عن أبي يحيى القتات, عن مجاهد, عن عبد الله بن عباس ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) قال: أمرهم. حدثني محمد بن عمرو, قال: ثنا أبو عاصم, قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث, قال: ثنا الحسن, قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعا, عن ابن أبي نجيح, عن مجاهد ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) قال: شأنهم. حدثنا بشر, قال: ثنا يزيد, قال: ثنا سعيد, عن قتادة ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) قال: أصلح حالهم. حدثنا محمد بن عبد الأعلى, قال: ثنا محمد بن ثور, عن معمر, عن قتادة ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) قال: حالهم. حدثني يونس, قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب, قال: قال ابن زيد, في قوله ( وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ ) قال حالهم. والبال: كالمصدر مثل الشأن لا يعرف منه فعل, ولا تكاد العرب تجمعه إلا في ضرورة شعر, فإذا جمعوه قالوا بالات.
