The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, the Exalted: الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَضَلَّ أَعْمَالَهُمْ (47:1) (Those who disbelieve and turn away from the path of Allah — He causes their works to come to nothing.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: Those who have denied the oneness of Allah (tawḥīd) and have worshipped another besides Him, and who have turned away from Islam — from the profession and the affirmation to which he wished to summon — the one who wished to worship Him, who wished to profess His oneness, and who wished to confirm the truthfulness of His Prophet Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — أَضَلَّ أَعْمَالَهُمْ (He causes their works to come to nothing) — He says: Allah has made their works into an error, without guidance and without a straight path, because they were performed upon the path of Satan and not upon the straight way.
وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ (And those who believe and perform righteous deeds) — The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: And those who have held Allah to be truthful and have rendered obedience to Him, and who have followed His command and His prohibition, وَآمَنُوا بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ (and who believe in what was sent down upon Muḥammad) — He says: and who have held to be truthful the Book that Allah sent down upon Muḥammad, وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ كَفَّرَ عَنْهُمْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ (and it is the Truth from their Lord — He has wiped out their evil deeds from them) — He says: Allah, on account of their having done that, wiped out from them the evil of the works they had committed, so that He did not call them to account for it and did not punish them for it. وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ (and He has set right their condition) — He says: and He has set right their affair and their condition: in this world (al-dunyā) among those closely bound to Him, and in the Hereafter by causing them to inherit eternal felicity and the abiding, perpetual dwelling in His gardens (jannāt).
