The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَأَنَّ الْكَافِرِينَ لا مَوْلَى لَهُمْ (That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe, and because the disbelievers have no protector) (47:11).

The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: this deed which We have done with these two groups — the group of faith and the group of disbelief — through Our aid to the group that believes in Allah and the making firm of their feet, and Our destruction of the group of disbelief, بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا (is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe). He says: because Allah is the protector (walī) of whoever believes in Him and obeys His messenger.

As Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, concerning His statement ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا (That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe), he said: their protector (walī).

And it has been transmitted to us that this, in the reading of ʿAbd Allāh, reads: "That is because Allah is the protector (walī) of those who believe", and the word "anna" which occurs in [sūra] al-Māʾida, which in our maṣāḥif reads إِنَّمَا وَلِيُّكُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ (Indeed, your protector is only Allah and His messenger), reads in his reading "innamā mawlākumu Llāhu" (indeed, your protector is only Allah).

And His statement وَأَنَّ الْكَافِرِينَ لا مَوْلَى لَهُمْ (and because the disbelievers have no protector). He says: and because the disbelievers have no protector (walī) and no helper in Allah.
