And His words ( وَإِذَا تُتْلَى عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍ ) (And when Our verses are recited to them as clear proofs): the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: and when Our verses are recited to these polytheists in Allah from your people — that is, Our arguments which We have advanced against them in that which We have sent down of Our Book upon Muḥammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace — ( بَيِّنَاتٍ ) (as clear proofs), that is, clear and luminous, ( قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ ) (those who disbelieve say of the truth when it came to them): the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: those who denied the oneness of Allah and rejected His Messenger say, concerning the truth when it came to them from Allah, which He sent down upon His Messenger — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — ( هَذَا سِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ ) (this is manifest sorcery), they mean: this Qurʾān is a deception that deceives us and takes away the hearts of whoever hears it, as sorcery does; ( مبين ) (manifest), he says: it makes clear to whoever attentively considers it among those who hear it that it is manifest sorcery.
