Tabari

Tafseer of Crouching · Al-Jaathiya · 45:25

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, "Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."

The explanation of His word, the Exalted: وَإِذَا تُتْلَى عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍ مَا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمْ إِلا أَنْ قَالُوا ائْتُوا بِآبَائِنَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ("And when Our clear signs are recited to them, their only argument is merely that they say: 'Bring our forefathers, if you are truthful'") (25)

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and when to these polytheists (mushrikīn), who deny the resurrection, Our signs are recited — namely that Allah will raise His creatures after their death and gather them to Himself on the Day of Resurrection for the reward and the punishment — (clear, bayyināt) that is to say: lucid and manifest, which remove the doubt from the heart of those whom Allah holds to be truthful therein, مَا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمْ إِلا أَنْ قَالُوا ائْتُوا بِآبَائِنَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ("their only argument is merely that they say: 'Bring our forefathers, if you are truthful'") — He, exalted is His praise, says: they had no argument against Our messenger, who recited that to them, except their word to him: bring us our forefathers, who have already perished, alive, and raise them for us, if you are truthful in what you recite to us and inform us, so that we may believe the truth of what you say, namely that Allah will raise us after our death and bring us to life after our decay.
