And His statement فَارْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُمْ مُرْتَقِبُونَ (So wait; indeed, they too are waiting). He, exalted is His mention, says to His Prophet Muḥammad, Allah's peace and blessings be upon him ﷺ: So wait, O Muḥammad, for the victory of your Lord and the help against these polytheists (mushrikīn), who ascribe partners to Allah, among your people of the Quraysh. Indeed, they for their part are awaiting your subjugation and a triumph over you, in that they turn away from the truth which you have brought them anyone who wished to accept it and to follow you therein.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning the interpretation of His statement فَارْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُمْ مُرْتَقِبُونَ , the people of interpretation spoke.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning فَارْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُمْ مُرْتَقِبُونَ : That is to say, wait; indeed, they are waiting.
