Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,

The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: إِنَّ هَؤُلاءِ لَيَقُولُونَ ("Indeed, these say") (34).
He — exalted is His mention — says, reporting about the words of the polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ: Indeed, these polytheists from your people, O Muḥammad ﷺ, ( لَيَقُولُونَ إِنْ هِيَ إِلا مَوْتَتُنَا الأولَى ) ("surely say: there is nothing but our first death") which we die, and that is the first death, ( وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنْشَرِينَ ) ("and we will not be raised to life again") after our death, and will not be resurrected — as a denial by them of the resurrection, the reward, and the punishment.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (the exegetes) have spoken.
