The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: Or have they firmly resolved upon a matter? Then indeed, We too are resolving firmly (79)

He, exalted is His mention, says: Or have these polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh firmly resolved upon a matter and settled it firmly, by which they devise schemes against the truth that We have brought them? Then indeed, We too settle firmly for them that which disgraces them and humiliates them through the punishment.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: ( Or have they firmly resolved upon a matter? Then indeed, We too are resolving firmly ), he said: they have resolved: if they devise evil, We too devise something similar.

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: ( Or have they firmly resolved upon a matter? Then indeed, We too are resolving firmly ), he said: or have they firmly resolved upon a matter? Then indeed, We too are resolving firmly.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His statement: ( Or have they firmly resolved upon a matter? Then indeed, We too are resolving firmly ), he said: or have they settled a matter firmly? Then indeed, We too settle Our matter firmly.
