But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.

( And there came to them no prophet but they mocked him ) He says: there came to no generation among those generations, and to no community among those bygone, earlier communities, a prophet who called them to guidance and to the path of truth, but those to whom their prophet came—whom He had sent to them—mocked him and ridiculed him, just as your people mock you, O Muhammad. He says: so let it not weigh heavily upon you what your people do to you, and let it not grieve you, for in their mockery of you they merely tread the way of their predecessors and the path of their bygone leaders who disbelieved in Allah.
