And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.

And His word: ( فَإِمَّا نَذْهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَإِنَّا مِنْهُمْ مُنْتَقِمُونَ ) (And if We take you away, then indeed We shall take vengeance upon them) The exegetes differed about who is meant by this threat. Some of them said: by this are meant the people of Islam from the community of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
* Mention of who said that:
Sawwār ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnbarī related to us, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of Abī al-Ashhab, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning His word: ( And if We take you away, then indeed We shall take vengeance upon them ) he said: there came after the Prophet of Allah a severe vengeance, and Allah, mighty is His praise, honored His Prophet ﷺ by not letting him witness within his community what vengeance would befall after him.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: ( And if We take you away, then indeed We shall take vengeance upon them ): Allah took His Prophet ﷺ away, and he saw within his community nothing but that which delighted his eye, and Allah let the vengeance continue after him. There is no prophet but that he saw the chastisement within his community, or — so he said — that which he did not desire. It has been related to us that the Prophet ﷺ was shown what would befall his community after him, and he remained dejected and did not laugh freely until he met Allah, blessed and exalted is He.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, saying: Qatāda recited ( And if We take you away, then indeed We shall take vengeance upon them ) and said: the Prophet ﷺ passed away and the vengeance continued, and Allah did not let His Prophet ﷺ see within his community anything that he detested until he passed away. There was never a prophet but that he saw the chastisement within his community, except your Prophet ﷺ. He said: and it has been related to us that the Prophet ﷺ was shown what would befall his community after him, and he was not seen laughing and free again until Allah took him to Himself.
And others said: by this are meant rather the people of polytheism from the Quraysh, and they said: Allah had already let His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, witness it concerning them.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His word: ( And if We take you away, then indeed We shall take vengeance upon them ): just as We took vengeance upon the bygone communities.
