But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."

وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ (And when the truth came to them). He, exalted be His praise, says: and when the Qurʾān came from Allah to these polytheists (mushrikīn), and a messenger from Allah whom He had sent to them with the call to Him, قَالُوا هَذَا سِحْرٌ (they said: This is magic). He says: this which this messenger has brought us is magic by which he bewitches us; it is not a revelation from Allah. وَإِنَّا بِهِ كَافِرُونَ (And indeed, we are disbelievers in it). He says: they said: and indeed, we reject it, we deny that this could be from Allah.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning his statement: وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ قَالُوا هَذَا سِحْرٌ وَإِنَّا بِهِ كَافِرُونَ (And when the truth came to them, they said: This is magic, and indeed, we are disbelievers in it), he said: these were the Quraysh; they said concerning the Qurʾān which Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — brought: this is magic.
