However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, the Exalted: بَلْ مَتَّعْتُ هَؤُلاءِ وَآبَاءَهُمْ حَتَّى جَاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ وَرَسُولٌ مُبِينٌ ("Nay, I let these and their forefathers enjoy [life], until the truth and a clear messenger came to them") (43:29).
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: بَلْ مَتَّعْتُ ("Nay, I let [them] enjoy") — O Muḥammad — هَؤُلاءِ ("these"), the polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people, وَآبَاءَهُمْ ("and their forefathers") who were before them, with life, and I did not punish them immediately for their unbelief, حَتَّى جَاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ ("until the truth came to them") — He, mighty is His praise, means by "the truth": this Qurʾān. He says: I did not destroy them with the punishment until I had sent down upon them the Book and had sent among them a clear messenger. By His statement وَرَسُولٌ مُبِينٌ ("and a clear messenger") He means Muḥammad ﷺ. And "the clear one" (al-mubīn) means: that he makes clear to them, by the proofs with which he argues against them, that he is truly a messenger of Allah in what he says.
