And His word: اسْتَجِيبُوا لِرَبِّكُمْ ("Respond to your Lord") — He, exalted is His mention, says to those who disbelieve in Him: respond, O people, to the caller of Allah, believe in Him, and follow Him in that with which He has come to you from your Lord. مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ يَوْمٌ لا مَرَدَّ لَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ("before there comes a Day for which there is no averting, from Allah") — He says: there is nothing that can avert its coming when Allah brings it on, and that is the Day of Resurrection. مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ مَلْجَإٍ يَوْمَئِذ ("there is for you no refuge on that Day") — He, exalted is His praise, says: there is for you, O people, no fortress in which you can protect yourselves and to which you can take refuge and to which you can cling against what descends upon you of Allah's punishment because of your disbelief in Him, as there was in the worldly life. وَمَا لَكُمْ مِنْ نَكِيرٍ ("and there is for you no denial") — He says: and you are not able to change what comes down upon you on that Day of His punishment, nor to defend yourselves against it when He punishes you with that with which He punishes you.

And concerning the meaning of what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ مَلْجَإٍ ("there is for you no refuge"); he said: no shelter.

And concerning His word: مِنْ نَكِيرٍ ("no denial"); he said: no helper who helps you.

Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ مَلْجَإٍ يَوْمَئِذ ("there is for you no refuge on that Day") to which you can take refuge, وَمَا لَكُمْ مِنْ نَكِيرٍ ("and there is for you no denial") — he says: no power by which you make yourselves strong.
