And He said: ( بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا ) (as a bearer of glad tidings and as a warner), as an adjectival qualifier (ṣifa); and if you wish, you may take its accusative as an expression of praise (madḥ), as though, when He mentioned it, He turned to praising it and said: We have called it an Arabic Qurʾān, as a bearer of glad tidings and as a warner, and We have named it an Arabic Qurʾān; and in what preceded the mention of it there was an indication of what was left unstated. And some of the grammarians of Kūfa said: The accusative of "qurʾānan" is on the basis of the verb: that is, its verses have been thus expounded. He said: And the accusative in it may also be on the basis of the cutting-off (qaṭʿ), because the word is complete at His statement "āyātuhu." He said: And were it in the nominative, as a qualifier of "the Book," that would be correct, just as He said in another place: كِتَابٌ أَنْـزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ (a Book which We have sent down to you, blessed). And he said: And likewise, what applies to His statement ( بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا ) (as a bearer of glad tidings and as a warner) is what applies to ( قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا ) (an Arabic Qurʾān).

And His statement: ( لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ ) (for a people who have knowledge). He says: The verses of this Book have been expounded as an Arabic Qurʾān for a people who know the Arabic language.

( بَشِيرًا ) (as a bearer of glad tidings) for them: He brings them the glad tidings, if they believe in it and act upon what has been sent down in it of the limits of Allah (ḥudūd) and His obligations (farāʾiḍ), of the Garden (janna). ( وَنَذِيرًا ) (and as a warner). He says: and as one who warns, by the command of Allah, whoever denies it and does not act upon what is in it, in this near world, and with the everlasting abode forever in the fire of Hell (jahannam) in the deferred Hereafter.

And His statement: ( فَأَعْرَضَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ ) (but most of them turned away). The Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: The majority of this people, to whom this Qurʾān was sent down as a bearer of glad tidings and as a warner — and they are the people of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace — exalted themselves arrogantly above listening to it and pondering the proofs of Allah that are in it, and turned away from it. He says: So they do not listen to it such that they would hear it, out of aversion to it and out of arrogance.
