The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ ("And this is granted only to those who are patient, and this is granted only to him who possesses a tremendous portion") (41:35).
He, whose mention is exalted, says: the repelling of evil with that which is good is granted only to those who are patient for the sake of Allah amid afflictions and grievous trials. And He said: "wa-mā yulaqqāhā" (and this is granted) and did not say "wa-mā yulaqqāhu," because the meaning of the statement is: and no one is granted this action, namely the repelling of evil with that which is better.
And His statement: وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ ("and this is granted only to him who possesses a tremendous portion"). He says: and no one is granted this except him who has a share and a tremendous, prior fortune in good deeds.
As Muḥammad related to us, he said: Aḥmad related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His statement: وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ ("and this is granted only to him who possesses a tremendous portion"): the one possessing fortune (jadd).
And it has been said: that the portion of which Allah, exalted be His praise, has informed in this verse that it is for these people, is the Garden (janna).
* Mention of those who said that:
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا ("And this is granted only to those who are patient")... the verse. And the tremendous portion: the Garden. It has been related to us that a man reviled Abū Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, while the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was present. He forgave him for a while, but then the anger boiled up in Abū Bakr, and he gave him a reply back. Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ stood up, and Abū Bakr followed him and said: O Messenger of Allah, the man reviled me, and I forgave and overlooked it while you were sitting; but when I began to defend myself, you stood up, O Prophet of Allah. Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "There was indeed an angel of the angels who was repelling it from you, but when you approached to defend yourself, the angel went away and the devil (shayṭān) came. And by Allah, I would not sit with the devil, O Abū Bakr."
ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ ("And this is granted only to those who are patient, and this is granted only to him who possesses a tremendous portion"). He says: those for whom Allah has prepared the Garden.
