The exposition of the explanation of His word, exalted is He: "وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَغْلِبُونَ" (And those who disbelieved said: Do not listen to this Qurʾān and make noise during it, that perhaps you may overcome.)
He, exalted is His mention, says: "وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا" (And those who disbelieved) in Allah and His Messenger, from the idolaters of Quraysh: "لا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ" (Do not listen to this Qurʾān and make noise during it.) He says: they said to those who obeyed them among their allies from the idolaters: do not listen to the reciter of this Qurʾān when he recites it, and do not lend him your ear, and do not follow what is in it so as to act according to it.
As Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: "وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَغْلِبُونَ" (And those who disbelieved said: Do not listen to this Qurʾān and make noise during it, that perhaps you may overcome.) He said: this is the word of the idolaters; they said: do not follow this Qurʾān and turn away from it.
And His word: "وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ" (and make noise during it) — he says: cover it over with false talk when you hear its reciter reciting it, so that you do not hear it and do not understand what is in it.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.
Mention of those who said that:
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Ḥakkām related to us, from ʿAnbasah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazzah, from Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah: "لا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ" (Do not listen to this Qurʾān and make noise during it.) He said: shouting and whistling, and jumbling up words against the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he recited — Quraysh did this.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — all from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, concerning His word: "وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ" (and make noise during it.) He said: by means of shouting and whistling and jumbling up speech against the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when he recited the Qurʾān — Quraysh did this.
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, from Qatādah, concerning His word: "وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ" (And those who disbelieved said: Do not listen to this Qurʾān and make noise during it) — that is to say: deny it and reject it and combat it. He said: this is the word of the idolaters among the Arabs.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, from Maʿmar, he said: some of them said concerning His word: "وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ" (and make noise during it): talk and shout, that perhaps you may not hear it.
And His word: "لَعَلَّكُمْ تَغْلِبُونَ" (that perhaps you may overcome) — he says: that perhaps, by that action of yours, you may turn away the one who wishes to listen to it from listening, so that he does not hear it, and when he does not hear it and does not understand it, he will not follow it, and you will thereby, by that action of yours, overcome Muḥammad.
