The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: اللَّهُ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَنْعَامَ لِتَرْكَبُوا مِنْهَا وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ (40:79) (Allah is He Who has made the cattle for you, that you may ride some of them and eat of some of them) (40:79).
The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: ( اللهُ ) (Allah), to whom alone godhood belongs and to none other than Him — O you who ascribe partners to Him (mushrikīn) from among the Quraysh — ( الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأنْعَامَ ) (Who has made the cattle for you), consisting of camels, cattle, small livestock, horses, and other beasts of burden that the people of Islam keep for riding or as food. ( لِتَرْكَبُوا مِنْهَا ) (that you may ride some of them): he means the horses and the donkeys. ( وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ ) (and eat of some of them): he means the camels, the cattle, and the small livestock. And He said: ( لِتَرْكَبُوا مِنْهَا ) (that you may ride some of them), and the meaning of that is: that you may ride a part of them and eat of another part of them. He has omitted [the second part], relying upon the indication in the wording for that which has been omitted.
