The discourse on the explanation of His statement: And when it is said to them: "Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites turning away from you with great aversion (4:61).
Abū Jaʿfar said: By this He means, exalted be His praise: Do you not see, O Muḥammad, those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you — namely the hypocrites (munāfiqīn) — and those who claim that they believe in what was sent down before you — namely from among the People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb) — while they wish to bring their dispute before the false deity (ṭāghūt)? = "And when it is said to them: come to what Allah has sent down" — by this He means: "And when it is said to them: come," that is: hasten to the judgment of Allah which He has sent down in His Book, and to the Messenger, that he may judge between us = "you see the hypocrites turning away from you" — by this He means: they refuse to come to you so that you might judge between them, and they likewise hold others back from coming to you = "with great aversion (ṣudūdan)."

Ibn Jurayj has said the following concerning this:
9903 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: "And when it is said to them: come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger," he said: the Muslim called the hypocrite to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he might judge. He said: "you see the hypocrites turning away from you with great aversion."

= As for the explanation of the statement of the one who regards the one who calls to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, as the Jew, and the one who is called as the hypocrite — in accordance with what I have mentioned of the statements of those who said that in the explanation of His statement: Do you not see those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you — that is in accordance with what I have set forth earlier.
